Fish and omega-3 through the use of fish oil has been around for centuries, and used for all sorts of ailments. But the more educated we became the more we put fish oil, and fish oil benefits on the back shelves, because, after all we didn’t need a prescription for it?

“Some of the most consistent evidence that we have is that omega 3 fatty acids, which most people would take as supplements in the form of fish oil may help decrease the risk of Alzheimer’s disease,” said Dr. Lori Daiello, research scientist in the Alzheimer’s Disease and Memory Disorders Center at Rhode Island Hospital.
In Daiello’s latest study, she looked at 819 individuals enrolled in the Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative, a federally-funded national study that followed older adults with normal cognition.
“We picked out the people who had been taking fish oil prior to coming in to the study and followed them throughout the time they were in the study looking at their cognitive tests and their brain imaging. We compared how they did over time with people who didn’t take fish oil during the study,” she said.
Daiello said those who took the fish oil, over time, had better preserved memory and less loss of brain tissue. The omega 3 fatty acids are found in foods like salmon, sardines and shrimp.
“It looks as though there is a process by which these omega 3 fatty acids can slow or decrease the production of amyloid in the brain,” Daiello said.
Amyloid is the protein implicated in Alzheimer’s disease. Daiello hopes the findings motivate further study.
So should you start taking fish oil supplements?
It’s up to you and your doctor. For cardiovascular health, the dose is normally one to two grams a day.
